THE signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between government through the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) and a Chinese firm Anhui Shuian Construction for the construction of Rupanga/Lubongo dam is expected to ease water supplies in the City of Gweru and Shurugwi Town.
Rupanga/Lubongo dam will be constructed at an estimated cost of US$127,5m, while an additional US$60m will be required for a 60km pipeline to Gweru. Treatment works will require another US$60m bringing total cost for the project to US$247.5m.
With estimated capacity of 200 million cubic metres the dam which is to be located on the Runde River between Shurugwi and Zvishane in the Midlands District
Current daily water demand for both Gweru and Shurugwi stands at 82 ML but current supply is 52 ML.
However, construction of the dam will help easily meet demand and excess capacity will be channeled to farming activities. The dam is also expected to also spur growth in industry and mining
