THE Youth in Agriculture Unit under the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture,Water,Climate and Rural Resettlement says all is set for the awards ceremony tomorrow to recognize the top 50 young farmers in the country under its branding and profiling programme.
According to Head of the youth desk in the ministry Nickros Kajengo all was in place to host the awards ceremony tomorrow with several sponsors having committed to the event.
“All is in place to host this glamorous event which is honour our young champion framers, we are grateful to the ministry in particular the minister, his deputies and permanent secretary for the support they have rendered. Also we cannot forget our sponsors who have supported us recognize youths who have excelled in the agriculture sector and we can guarantee them of a top notch event”
Kajengo said the event was part of efforts to lure young people into agriculture and demonstrate to the “doubting Thomases” that the sector was lucrative.
“These young farmers were nominated from different sectors such as cropping, livestock, innovation, engineering and irrigation, water, soil management and media. The essence of young farmer branding is to help in luring and attracting young farmers into the agriculture sector”.
Under the branding programme information of successful youth farmers will be published through various platforms that include print and online media.
Other platforms will include distribution of brochures at major exhibition platforms such as the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) and Harare Agricultural Show (HAS).
He said the thrust to lure investment in agriculture was premised on the fact that Zimbabwe is an agro based nation and young people are beginning to show appetite to venture into the sector.
“The branding and profiling exercise aim to unlock the potential of the youth in the sector in line with with government vision 2030 whose thrust is to achieve upper middle income economy by 2030. Youth dividend is an important pillar towards realization of this. The list is a mere reflection and a fraction of capable young farmer in the agricultural arena,” said Kajengo.
Government chief whip in the House of Assembly Togarepi Pupurai is expected to officiate at the ceremony.
Among the key sponsors are SEEDCO, Agriseeds, K2 and Pioneer,
